TinyGrab 2.0: The Road Ahead

TinyGrab is all about simple screenshot sharing. It has quickly become one of the most popular creative file sharing apps for Mac, Windows and soon to be iPhone.

It’s been just over a year since the first tests started with TinyGrab and it’s safe to say that we’ve certainly come a long way since then. TinyGrab started life as a test, it was originally intended to be an application for a small group of friends to share images with each other, quickly. When we launched the open beta for TinyGrab we had no idea of the kind of overwhelming response we’d receive. Simple screenshot sharing was the tagline that we used to launch TinyGrab back in July 2009; 10 months on we’re reflecting on our motto and the direction which we want to continue in. Fear not, we are remaining loyal to the screenshots which have served us so well.

Over the past year that TinyGrab has been operating we have seen the rise and fall of some giants in our market. Recently there has been a lot of competition for TinyGrab opening up in similar spaces; however these apps attempt to cater for all file uploading needs, as opposed to focusing on one aspect and doing it really well. TinyGrab has been focused on screenshot sharing for the past year and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. It would be foolish of us to think that our small team could compete in the very crowded market of multiple file-type sharing; our resources would be stretched too thin and we just wouldn’t be able to do an adequate job. TinyGrab is completely focused on being the best in the screenshot sharing market, something that we believe we’re just not at yet.

Today we’re announcing, officially, our plans for TinyGrab 2.0. We’re going through a complete rewrite. Out with the old system and in with the new. The web interface is currently undergoing a huge redesign, API a complete haul over and the apps have some exciting new features coming to them. We’re not quite ready to throw all of our cards down onto the table just yet, but we still have a few things up our sleeve.

    Very very nice!
I’m still very loyal to the app and use it throughout the day multiple times.
Can i signup for the beta somewhere? or is it going to be public beta?

We haven’t actually finished building this thing yet, when we do we’ll be doing private internal testing and then rolling it out to all users at the same time. Whilst having private walled betas is great for publicity, it does make us look awfully pretentious.

Sounds great! However, do users who’ve paid for v1.0 also have to pay for v2.0 again? Some software companies tend to re-charge people (Yes, I’m also looking at you Apple) with every mayor update.

Looks good! I’d also love to be part of the beta if you’re going to make it available! Do we have an estimated timeframe for TinyGrab 2.0 release?

Keep up the good work, TinyGrab is by far the best screenshot sharing service! (IMO)…

[…] TinyGrab 2.0 was originally announced in April this year – we were aiming to have launched the new service by late June / early July, but unfortunately this didn’t come to fruition. There are a number of reasons why our 2.0 launch has been delayed: we’ve had a mass team shakeup and we’ve completely rewritten the entire TinyGrab system from the ground up. TinyGrab v1, to put it simply, just can’t scale. All of the issues that currently affect TinyGrab arise because the original TinyGrab system was built to cope with around 3,000 users. When we launched TinyGrab in July 2009 we had no idea the amount of critical success that we’d have. TinyGrab 2.0 has been written with scalability in mind. We can quickly add new features to the new system without having to break it, or take it offline, every few weeks or so. TinyGrab 2.0 is the system that we envisioned right from the start. […]
